Cutting PCBs is a common operation in prototyping and PCB manufacturing. Whether it is resizing a PCB to fit an enclosure or separating individual boards from a large panel, the process is what we are talking about when it comes to cutting PCBs.

Steps to cutting PCBs

1. Plan the cuts
Measure and mark: Use a ruler and a marker to draw the cut lines. Double-check the measurements;
Check the layout: Make sure the cut lines do not interfere with traces, components, or vias;
Leave margins: If possible, leave some extra space around components and traces to avoid accidental damage.

2. Prepare the workspace
Place a cutting mat or a solid work surface;
Use a clamp to secure the PCB to prevent movement;
Ensure ventilation to avoid inhaling fiberglass dust.

3. Choose a cutting method
For single-layer or thin double-layer boards, use a utility knife to score along the cut lines. Apply pressure and repeat several times until the PCB can be broken by hand.

For thick PCBs, use a hacksaw or rotary tool to make straight cuts. Cut along the marked lines slowly and steadily to ensure accuracy.

4. Smooth the edges
After cutting, the edges of the PCB may be rough or jagged. Use sandpaper or a file to smooth these edges.

5. Clean the board
Wipe the board with a damp cloth to remove dust and debris from the cutting.
Inspect the cut area for any marks or component damage, if damaged, consider using solder to repair it.

Conclusion
Cutting PCB boards requires careful planning, using the right tools, and proper safety measures.
