What is BOM in PCBA?

The full name of PCBA is PCB assembly. When loading components on the PCB in the next step, what you need to use is the BOM file. The full name of BOM is Bill Of Material. The BOM of a product describes how many spare parts are needed to assemble the product. Only by purchasing materials according to the BOM can subsequent PCBA production be arranged.

The BOM includes: 1.Finished product material number; 2.Stage; 3.Material number; 4.Product name and specifications; 5.Usage; 6.Plug-in position; 7.Process.

The finished product material number refers to the number of the final product, which is related to the product model and BOM version. Customers can know the difference between this batch and previous batches by seeing the finished product material number, because they can learn BOM-related information from this set of data;

The order describes the affiliation of components. Those that are directly involved in assembling finished products are called level 1, and those that are directly involved in assembling semi-finished products are called level 2. Capacitors and resistors are level 2 materials, because these components need to be made into PCBA through SMT first. Only then can it be further assembled into products. PCBA, shell manufacturing, etc. are called level 1, because these directly constitute the finished product. The subordination relationship of levels is to facilitate the division of labor arrangement in production;

The material number is the number for each component. Different materials have different properties. For example, resistors have DIP and SMD. SMD is divided into 0402, 0603, 0201, etc. In order to quickly identify, the material number is formulated;.

The product name specification is the specification of the component. It is not commonly used in production, but it needs to be checked when doing IQA inspection of incoming materials;

Usage indicates the quantity of components used in a product, and data statistics can be easily made when purchasing materials;

The plug-in position is used to describe the location of electronic components on the PCB;

The process is used to indicate whether the material is used for SMT or post-assembly.

The R&D and manufacturing of a new product first starts with the initial process of product creativity and feasibility evaluation, followed by preliminary technical analysis and prototype product design. After the prototype product is stable and analyzed, the first version of the engineering bill of materials will be generated (EBOM, Engineering BOM). Before the final formal mass production of a new product, the production bill of materials (PBOM, Production BOM) needs to be completed for relevant departments to follow.

What precautions should be taken when making the BOM list?

The beginning of the BOM needs to be marked: 1.Product model; 2.Version number; 3.Development date; 4.Document number; 5.Total number of pages.

Each product will continue to optimize and upgrade its design and functions. The version number is used to distinguish the version after each change. When a new version is determined, the old version must be marked as an expired document and cease to be used. If you want to deactivate the new version and enable the old version, the BOM of the old version needs an updated version number instead of the original one. For example, it started with version A, then upgraded to version B, and later deactivated B, and planned to use the previous version A, then please define the original version A as version C. If you want to reuse BOM A, please define A as version C.

Why do you do that? Because if it is not defined as version C but is still called version A, if version A needs to be upgraded and optimized again, the optimized version number will cause management confusion and increase the chance of errors.

BOM is an essential document when manufacturing PCBA. A complete and strict BOM list can make the production and procurement of PCBA smoother.
