Halogen-free solder paste is simply a solder paste that eliminates halogen compounds and can meet environmental and safety standards. Due to the increasingly stringent regulations for environmental protection, the application of halogen-free materials in the electronics manufacturing industry has basically become a must.

What is solder paste?
Before studying halogen-free solder paste, let's first understand what solder paste is. Solder paste is a mixture of powdered metal solders that is used to stabilize the components and circuit boards after PCB assembly. Solder paste is applied to the PCB using a template, and then the components are mounted on the PCB, and then the solder paste is melted and solidified through reflow soldering to form a bond.

What does "halogen-free" mean?
Halogen-free means that the solder paste does not contain halogen-containing compounds such as chlorine, bromine, fluorine and iodine. Halogens are usually added to traditional solder pastes as activators in flux to improve welding performance. However, halogens release toxic gases when burned, which affects human health and the environment.

To qualify as halogen-free, solder paste must meet standards set by environmental regulations, such as IEC 61249-2-21, which limits chlorine (Cl) and bromine (Br) content to less than 900 ppm each and total halogen content to less than 1500 ppm.

Halogen-free solder paste consists of the following main ingredients:

Solder alloy
The metal portion of the solder paste, which consists of a tin-silver-copper alloy that is RoHS compliant.

Flux
The flux in halogen-free solder paste is specially designed to not contain halogen-containing activators. The flux still removes oxides from the metal surface and promotes wetting during the soldering process.

Additives
Other additives may be included to enhance viscosity, prevent oxidation, and improve printing and reflow performance.

Conclusion
Halogen-free solder paste is an environmentally friendly solution for modern PCB manufacturing, and by eliminating halogen compounds, the release of hazardous substances can be reduced, ensuring regulatory compliance.
